Good Vs. Cool

September 10, 2007 - By

Sometimes we like things for the wrong reasons. I don’t even know if ‘like’ is the right word. I’m talking about the difference between ‘good’ and ‘cool’.

Take ACDC’s Back in Black for example. Everyone knows that song, and that riff, though somewhat simple is so killer. I wouldn’t say that I like that song, but when I hear it I want it cranked. To me it’s not a good song, but it is a cool song.

The same can be said about so many movies and shows and even bands. I don’t think it’s a bad thing either.

I think the majority of what we make each other on IMP are cool mixes. Speaking for myself, a lot of the new bleeding edge indie stuff is just so cool (AND I like it), so I mix it.

So what is a good song? When does a cool song get good status? To me I think the only test is time and the longevity.

I defy someone to make me a mix that I will still love in five years.
