Backing up your memories

June 2, 2013 - By

I wrote this for my family. They’re not all luddites, but I also think they need a push sometimes. I hope this helps someone else too!

I consider myself the biggest nerd you know, and so I hope you don’t mind some nerdy advice about computers and pictures/videos! We all have a TON of these memories on our computers, but hard drives die. Every hard drive you own has a lifespan. Gulp! Of course a tragedy like a house fire could also claim so many of these files forever too! I know I’d be pretty devastated if I could never see some of my old children’s baby photos again.

The solution to this problem is to keep copies of your pictures and videos online! My advice right now is to use Flickr (owned by Yahoo!). They offer a free TB (terabyte, which is 1000 gigabytes), which is about half a million photos (and likely more space than is on your harddrive). You can sign up here: http://www.flickr.com/ There’s also a nice social aspect, so you can share photos with friends and family like me, publicly or keep them private, whatever!

Once you’re signed up you can mass upload your stuff and know that it’s safe in California or something, and no-doubt on several mirrored servers that a team of IT super-nerds are babysitting.

You should really do this. It’s easy. Don’t put it off! You can start today! 😀
