Stand Against New Canadian Copyright Bill

June 18th, 2008 | Comment | Personal

I don’t usually get all activisty on things, but there is a new Copyright law that got proposed on the 12th of June that is just insane enough to get me off my chair. If it passes the very concept of mixtapes is punishable by serious fine of $500 for any song downloaded. Bill C61 is so strict that it would be illegal to rip a CD you actually own onto your laptop or ipod. This is insane. I just emailed some folks, maybe you want to to.

Even if you’re not Canadian you can get involved. If this bill passes I will stop mixtaping. This hurts non-Canadian with copyrightten materials. Take a Stand!

I’m a constituent who has been following recent developments in Canadian copyright law. I’m concerned that the Copyright bill presented by the government on June 12th goes too far in outlawing the lawful use of copyrighted material, and does not take into account the needs of consumers and Canada’s creative community who are exploiting the potential of digital technology. I’m disappointed that this bill adopts an American approach to digital copyright laws, instead of crafting a Canadian approach.

Canada’s copyright laws need to advance Canada’s interests. This means copyright laws that respect ordinary consumer practices, such as unlocking cell phones and copying the contents of purchased DVDs for use in video iPods. The current bill outlaws these practices. This means copyright that facilitates the work of Canadian creators, such as documentary filmmakers, who instead find that this bill outlaws the use DVDs as source materials for their films. This means we find made-in-Canada solutions to the challenges of file-sharing, such as consideration of the P2P proposal of the Songwriters Association of Canada. Instead, this bill paves the road to importing the consumer file-sharing lawsuit strategy that has failed so spectacularly in the United States. Canada deserves better.

Please ensure that this bill really is made for Canadians by allowing all Canadian stakeholders a say in its final contents. That means meaningful consultation in the coming months, and opening up Canada’s copyright policy to more than just the special interests that lobbied behind the scenes for this law. As my MP, I urge you to represent my interests in the copyright debate.

Arley: 1, Alarm Clock: 3

May 13th, 2008 | Comment | Personal

Despite my crazy fatigue I had a lot of trouble getting to sleep last night. Needless to say I wasn’t happy to hear our alarm clock go off this morning. Nor was I glad to hear it the following three times. My wife hit the wrong button and went off to the shower. When it went off again (and ear-bleedingly loud), I was faced with the challenge of turning it off. The little image with this blog might not do justice for just how many buttons are on this contraption. There are buttons on the top, the face, and the display screen. I mashed a collection of them and popped the CD thing open and somehow the music stopped. Ten minutes later it was round two. In the scuffle the CD came out and the machine was on its side. It looked done. My wife entered the room for round three and found me crouched on the end of the bed having trashed the room to unplug every electrical outlet that could have something to do with the non-stop beeping.

This annoys me more as an awake designer than a sleeping bear. In the clocks defense, I never have to turn it off, and I likely haven’t touched the thing in over three months; but as an end user I shouldn’t have to refer to the schematics every time I need to turn one of the alarms off. Dashboards, power tools and alarm clocks should all be designed so intuitively that even the grouchiest sleep deprived lunatic can turn them off first try. Less is more.

5 Week American

May 5th, 2008 | Comment | Personal

Our five weeks in Tennessee seemed to take a long ages at the time, it’s so good to be back. Even though we’re such close neighbours to America they are very different people. “ya’lls” withstanding, the food was the biggest difference for us; they didn’t have much in the way of veggies. Even the produce we bought at the grocery store was inedible or quick to rot. We kept ourselves very busy down there: Guitar Hero, Smokey Mountains, State Aquarium, BB King and Restaurant critiquing were among our many pasttimes (Wasabi’s in Knoxville is the best restaurant I have ever been to in my life). All in all, my first trip to the states was ok. They didn’t seem to all be gun toting maniacs. Just that one guy…

Oh… Canada

My wife and I just got home from our five week trip to Oak Ridge Tennessee (more on that next time). I have to say it’s really really good to be home. Five weeks is too long to go anywhere, but we picked the right time and left Kincardine to do that awkward “winter” thing on its own. Being a web developer has many advantages, as most of my clients did even realize I had left! We missed our home, our town, our friends and our drive thru coffee shops. If you were missing us I guess we’ll see ya’ll soon.

When I was your age…

Last week I was watching a webcam at the Narrows on Eagle Lake in Northern Ontario. I thought to myself ‘huh, I could watch the sun set on my favourite getaway lake…’, and it struck me how weird that was. 18 years ago I didn’t know anyone who had a Personal Computer, I had never heard of the internet, and “cams” still used film. Now I can use my laptop to wirelessly watch images-as-they-happen thousands of miles away, then take a picture on my cell phone and instantly post it on my blog! I can totally pull a “when I was your age” story out of that.

Attached is a picture I would never tell the younguns about… it’s the shameful way I resorted to playing DDR at when I foolhardily decided to play on the hardest setting.

Grown Up

I just met an American named Randy who was very surprised at how old Kristi and I are. Apparently we look a lot younger. My first thought was how awesome our Canadian health care system is, but then I remembered how my generation acts. It seems most people my age still watch cartoons, play video games and dress the same as when we were in high school.

Today I submitted my latest Threadless t-shirt design. Feel free to jump on and vote.

One Dollar Billz Ya’ll

March 31st, 2008 | Comment | Personal

You know what I miss? One dollar bills. I hate carrying around coins, so I seldom do. I have been known to even tape coins together so they don’t rattle. I also hate the names “loony” and “twonie”. Terrible! My dad wanted the name “doubloon” to take-off for the two dollar coin; at least it has historical meaning as a dorky pun. With the one-note you can walk around with a stuffed wallet, and the world is at your convenience. The only downside is I’d prolly also make a lot more stupid bets.

Hot Water

Lately I’ve been drinking a lot more water. I am really enjoying really hot and even luke warm water. I am getting a lot of flack for this. I don’t see how it can be disgusting: it’s water. It tastes watery. I want someone to agree with me. Check out another cool live music video by Architecture in Helsinki.

Weekend Blast!

You know what I like to do on a weekend? FILING! Over the weekend my wife and I tackled the enormous job of combining all of our filing into one filing cabinet. It wasn’t as painful as it sounds. I quite like sorting and categorizing. I haven’t always been this way; every envelope before Feb ’06 was still unopened until yesterday.

Here’s an amazing live Arcade Fire video.

Best Year Ever

February 19th, 2008 | Comment | Personal

This past weekend was my one year wedding anniversary with my wife Kristi. We went out of town for some time alone. We realized that this has been the best year of our lives. We have set a very high bar for future years, but we’re up to the challenge.

I love you baby!
