I amn’t

July 10, 2013 - By

Today when asked a simple question my two year old replied “I amn’t”. We laughed, but didn’t correct her, after all: she’s actually made a pretty sharp move there! I think the English language is more wrong than my daughter. It’s a silly language. Let’s consider the conjugation of other pronouns:

  • You are not / You’re not / You aren’t
  • He is not / He’s not / He isn’t
  • They are not / They’re not / They aren’t

In any of these three cases the pronoun can be contracted, or the “are” and “is“. So why not “am“?

I amn’t sure why.
