This is the time of year when Twitter gives me the conference itch! It seems every week there is some event going on directly relevant to my interests. It usually starts in March with SXSW, and then avalanches into about 20 weeks of hashtags for various inspirational sounding conferences. What an exciting industry! The catch is these events all seem to be happening in Texas, New York, California, Florida, and Illinois – and not in Canada.
I currently live in Burlington Ontario, which is (depending who you ask), a part of the Greater Toronto Area. We neighbour with urban centers like Hamilton, Milton, Oakville, Mississauga and Toronto. With over 8 million people in a commutable distance (source) we are surrounded by a quarter of the population of Canada, and yet it feels like we have less web related events than other parts of the world. We do have some as outlined in this Smashing Magazine round up, but either the people I follow aren’t attending these, or they don’t carry the clout of the larger and more recognized events that seem to draw big names and buzz.
I feel like there’s a lot more room for nerdy, nerdy web events in the GTA. Toronto nerds unite!
