Business as Usual

As a freelancer all of my income comes from client work. So it might be somewhat unorthodox to send away a would-be client.

Today I had a call from the owner of a website looking for someone who could do updates to her site on a regular basis. I can sympathize with a non-geek that the idea of updating something so code-based could be unthinkable or intimidating. Rather than quoting on a maintenance contract I explained how tools like Adobe Contribute allow a relatively web-illiterate person to maintain their own sites!

While it doesn’t really grow my business at all, I hope it shows that I’m more interested in the clients ideal work-flow processes. It’s ironic, to do the best for the client I couldn’t make them my client… I got talking with this woman and learned that in the process of quote gathering other agencies were propsosing that she do an entire site redesign! While any site has room for improvement, this was definetly a needless upsell.

Here’s a lovely picture from a friends first day playing guitar hero. Somehow she missed the last note when in the red, failing at 100%. Neat!

Novelty Music

We all like the odd “odd” song. Sometimes they’re guilty pleasures, the rest of the time they probably should be. My wife and I had a discussion about this the last time we saw Malcom in the Middle. The theme is a perfect fit for the show and done by They Might be Giants. I personally feel like the majority of the work done by this band is novelty music, yet I have a friend who can listen to all of their albums marathon style. It’s not fair to fault someone for having different taste, I went through a huge Weird Al phase in grade 8, but my tastes have matured… Haven’t they?!

Time is always the greatest test. I am ready to accept that 10 years from now I will look back on bands like The Knife, Man Man and Of Montreal and call them novelty acts… we’ll see.

So how about you? Any novelty music in your life?

Things that I love

On November 2nd 2004 I made a blog post about my G1 expiring. Well have no fears friends, I have my G2 now, at the age of 27 the government now holds me to be responsible enough to drive on my own.

Driving isn’t something I enjoy doing, but lucky for me there are many other lovely things in my life. Here are three:

PORTALS
I’m a long time video gamer, and FPS is likely my favourite genre. I beat Portals in what seemed like a heartbeat, but it is still for me the absolute best FPS and Puzzle game I have ever played. Though short, it’s just short and sweet. It’s remarkably hilarious too. See the trailer below! I got so pumped by playing this that I have insisted that my wife play (as she is at the time of writing this) and I shall insist you get the demo if nothing else.

HOT TEA
Since getting a loose leaf pot and teas for Christmas Kristi and I haven’t looked back. To me there’s no better drink than a nice cup of tea. At this moment I am enjoying a nice cup of Spearmint tea from adagio. After a couple cups of looseleaf I can really tell the difference. Another favourite would be Fit Active from Teaopia.

BEING OUTSIDE?!
While it’s a well documented fact that I am indoorsy by nature, but this summer seems so different. First of all doing yard work on a yard one owns is much more rewarding. I have also enjoyed working on the laptop on the deck, and taking bike trips. Who knows what the future may hold.

And now the wonderful Portals trailer as narrated by GlaDos, the perky guide through the game.

Turning the Corner

A week that started as a confusing jumble is ending awesomely. This week has seen two excellent client meetings, and has been one of my most productive weeks ever. I even got to enjoy sometime working from the laptop outside. The key is to always stay positive!

Below is the video of my buddy Tim. He was commissioned to make a piece for a concert, and this is a video of him working. Pretty cool. I once collaborated on a collage with him called “America was there” or something like that…

Music Measured

I have been using Last.fm for just over a year now. I installed a ‘scrobbler’ on my winamp which tells last.fm what I’m listening to at any given moment on my computer. From this list Last.fm fine tunes my own radiostation (http://arleym.com/start.asp) and they make some good recommendations of other music I might like.

Anyways, today I was looking over my profile page (http://www.last.fm/user/arleym) and I saw that I’ve listened to just over 28,000 songs in the last year! I was amazed. Bear in mind this doesn’t include CDs, vinyl, iPod, imeem, last.fm radio or music I listen to in the car. I will also make the concession, that I’m not always at my computer when it’s playing music. Still, this is a TON of music.

Looking at my top 15 most-listened to bands was also an eye-openner. This list is by no means reflective on the order that I like bands in (granted Beatles and Radiohead are in the right places), but is more in keeping with the volume of work the artist(s) have produced. For instance, I have probably five Pink Floyd albums on my computer in mp3 form, but only two Spoon albums. To me this feels like I’ve listened to Spoon more, they got more repeat listens whereas Pink Floyd would have to have less plays to reach that number… (in theory, since the majority of PF played was likely Dark Side of the Moon, ha).

All in all I find this very interesting and informative. I wish they could show how much time all these songs added up to. If you’re on last.fm friend me up. Below is a list of my top 15 bands. No idea how Hives made it onto there, I don’t feel like I listen to them more than 5 times a year.

# rank Bandname # songs played

1 The Beatles 1,690
2 Radiohead 1,675
3 Beck 1,194
4 Pink Floyd 1,021
5 Neil Young 962
6 Spoon 914
7 The White Stripes 781
8 Feist 760
9 Led Zeppelin 716
10 The Rolling Stones 712
11 Salty Pirates 695
12 Menomena 648
13 David Bowie 591
14 The Arcade Fire 570
15 The Hives 482

Busy Busy August

It has been an incredibly busy month for me! So much so that I’ve been shirking my bloggy responsibilities somewhat. In addition to biketrips, visits from friends and family, I am contending with two very large projects that are aimed to launch at the end of the month!

I have decided to take the time to say that my site will return to weekly updates in the second week in September.

In the meantime here is my newest web 2.0 profile; Technorati Profile. I have to post this link to activate the account.

Have a great summer… unless any of you have anything better to do.
