Oh… Canada

My wife and I just got home from our five week trip to Oak Ridge Tennessee (more on that next time). I have to say it’s really really good to be home. Five weeks is too long to go anywhere, but we picked the right time and left Kincardine to do that awkward “winter” thing on its own. Being a web developer has many advantages, as most of my clients did even realize I had left! We missed our home, our town, our friends and our drive thru coffee shops. If you were missing us I guess we’ll see ya’ll soon.

Seasonal Music: Summer

Summer is almost here… wishful thinking from the Snowbelt in Ontario. Do you have favorite summer music? Last summer I made a mix with some favourites including Modest Mouse’s Summer and Beck’s Beercan. You can hear it here

There’s just a kind of sound with thin guitars (a la Strokes or Phoenix) that makes me feel like getting some wind in my hair.

Tell me your summer songs.

Best Mix of All Time

Let’s face it, mixtapes are perfect for trips. On a recent trip I’ve been listening almost exclusively to IMP mixes (received and my own creations). Recently I popped in a disc and the tracklist was so perfect I had to blog about it…

Here it is, the best mix of all time:

1. Pink Floyd – Speak To Me/Breathe (Breathe In The Air)
2. Pink Floyd – On The Run
3. Pink Floyd – Time
4. Pink Floyd – The Great Gig In The Sky
5. Pink Floyd – Money
6. Pink Floyd – Us And Them
7. Pink Floyd – Any Colour You Like
8. Pink Floyd – Brain Damage
9. Pink Floyd – Eclipse

That’s right, it’s a little something the industry calls “Dark Side of the Moon”. It’s perfect. When it started I relaxed in my bones, it’s that good.

Seriously, if you’re not familiar with it get it somehow.

Recent Work vol. 1

I recently read an article about freelance philosophies that really opened my eyes. For the last year I have busier than ever without ever taking the time to work on my own web presence. I always brushed it off; I’m too busy making client sites to worry about my own. The author went on to explain that as a developer I need to establish a solid web-presence, and not just my own website.

It has inspired me to start a Recent Work section of my site. It’s the perfect comprimise; updating my website while highlighting a few client projects.

Today marks the launch of the Campus Trails website. Campus Trails is the network of trails behind my alma-matter Canadore College / Nipissing University in North Bay Ontario. Working with Rebecca Barker and the Comm team I helped come up with the name for the trails, the logo, trail signs and this website.

House Works Company site went live last week. This was another Benjamin James Marketing Communications job that went perfectly. The combination of team work and fast acting clients brought this project together in nearly record time.

When I was your age…

Last week I was watching a webcam at the Narrows on Eagle Lake in Northern Ontario. I thought to myself ‘huh, I could watch the sun set on my favourite getaway lake…’, and it struck me how weird that was. 18 years ago I didn’t know anyone who had a Personal Computer, I had never heard of the internet, and “cams” still used film. Now I can use my laptop to wirelessly watch images-as-they-happen thousands of miles away, then take a picture on my cell phone and instantly post it on my blog! I can totally pull a “when I was your age” story out of that.

Attached is a picture I would never tell the younguns about… it’s the shameful way I resorted to playing DDR at when I foolhardily decided to play on the hardest setting.

Where do you listen to music?

I think it’s safe to say we all have a favourite place to spin the tunes.

At work through headphones, blaring in the car, at home in the parlour by the fire with your faithful dog… I think ‘where’ is almost as important as ‘what’. Some people like myself listen to music all day long if they can help it.

I would say the majority of my listening happens at the computer through surround sound while working. I wish I could give all music the benefit of headphones, it really opens the music up. If you’ve only thought that the Beta Band was ok, you might not have played through the phones; their music transforms. The worst place for me to judge music is in my car. Wind whistles in the one door and Canadian roads add a beat of their own on our seasonally mangled roads.

Next time you’re making someone a mix, maybe you should cater the tracklist to a location. “Best spun on the hightway” mix…

Where are you listening to music?

Grown Up

I just met an American named Randy who was very surprised at how old Kristi and I are. Apparently we look a lot younger. My first thought was how awesome our Canadian health care system is, but then I remembered how my generation acts. It seems most people my age still watch cartoons, play video games and dress the same as when we were in high school.

Today I submitted my latest Threadless t-shirt design. Feel free to jump on and vote.
